Council honors Purple Heart recipients and recognizes bystanders who saved a life with an AED

Mayor Ben Marciano read a proclamation declaring Aug. 7, 2025, National Purple Heart Day in Ocala and invited veterans forward for recognition. Several veterans accepted the proclamation and the mayor thanked them for their service.
Ocala Fire Rescue presented lifesaving awards to four bystanders (Mike Creme, Tom Culpepper, Rafael Rosa Agron and Katie Freeman) who used an automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR to revive a person who collapsed at Orangetheory on 06/23/2025. "The takeaway here is the importance of learning CPR and having AED access, which saved Mister Guentherman's life that day," a presenter said. The council applauded and expressed appreciation for community members and first responders.
