Council approves contract to add inside lanes on Southwest 44th Avenue

The Ocala City Council voted to approve a construction contract that will add two inside lanes to Southwest 44th Avenue, turning the segment between Southwest 20th Street and State Route 40 into a four-lane roadway.
"This project will construct the inside lanes for Southwest 44th Avenue from Southwest 20 Street to State Route 40 to make this section a 4 lane road," City Engineer Sean Lanier said, adding that contract time is eight months from notice to proceed. Lanier told council the outside lanes will remain open during work and staff recommended approval. Council followed with a roll-call vote, and the motion passed unanimously.
The council also adopted budget resolution 2025-168 to fund the project. Lanier said the work supports the city's strategic goals for quality of place and operational excellence. Council members asked about the schedule and traffic control; Lanier said the team expects to meet the timeline and keep two-way traffic on the outside lanes while crews build the center lanes. The second and final reading of unrelated ordinances was scheduled for Aug. 19, 2025, and staff will return with any necessary construction updates.
