Stanford’s Nourish project seeks Daly City participants for culturally tailored diabetes diet study

Dr. Meenal Mahari, a clinical assistant professor at Stanford Medicine, told the Daly City Council on July 27 that Nourish aims to help people manage type 2 diabetes without giving up culturally important foods. “Do we give up the food we love? And if not, what do we eat? How do we eat?” she asked, describing the project’s focus on South Asian and Filipino dishes adapted to support healthy blood glucose.
Mahari said Nourish has produced a recipe library and nutrition video series and is testing whether culturally modified meals change blood‑glucose responses. The IRB‑approved, NIH‑funded trial will use continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) in a four‑week crossover design so participants serve as their own controls. “You’ll wear a small glucose monitor for four weeks…you get two sensors so you can understand what happens when you eat your food versus the Nourish modified meals,” Mahari said. The study begins Aug. 31.
Eligibility and logistics: adults 18 or older with type 2 diabetes who are not on insulin can enroll; eligible participants will be called by a research coordinator, wear CGMs for four weeks, complete short surveys and receive chef‑prepared meals during one of the study weeks. Meals can be picked up in Redwood City, Stanford or San Jose. Participants are offered a $75 gift card. Mahari gave an email for follow‑up (mMahari@stanford.edu) and a study address (nourish@stanford.edu) and asked the council and community to help recruit around 15 Filipino adults in the Bay Area.
Council members and others on the dais praised the approach. Dr. Rod, who said he uses a CGM, called the devices “a game changer” that helped him manage blood sugars. Vice Mayor thanked the team for addressing community‑specific needs. Mahari emphasized that Nourish’s goal is practical, sustainable guidance: “food is social…our recipes can be enjoyed by anybody,” she said.
The study tests whether culturally tailored modifications — rather than asking people to stop eating traditional dishes — can improve glucose control and be adopted beyond the trial. Organizers said participant data will be handled according to strict privacy rules and that registration information will be available on Stanford’s Nourish pages when the team posts the study sign‑up.
