Dillon Ranger District reports trail upgrades and improved accessibility at Sapphire Point

Dan Morris, recreation staff officer, briefed the council on summer recreation projects. He said contractors are repairing the first mile of Chihuahua Gulch road (work expected to finish around Aug. 1) and partners completed 720 feet of buck-and-rail fencing and river-crossing improvements in parts of the Continental Divide Trail corridor.
"We finished the trail [at Sapphire Point]...It's all resurfaced. You can get a wheelchair up there or any type of mobility device now," Morris said, adding that the district installed a second vault toilet and an overlook that can be reserved on rec.gov. He noted further design work on the old Sapphire Point overlook is planned next summer.
Council members raised questions about drainage and accessibility; Morris and other Forest Service leaders said they are assessing trail class, connectivity and where to invest for the greatest community benefit.
Why it matters: improved trail accessibility and repaired infrastructure reduce maintenance burdens and expand recreation access for residents and visitors. The district encouraged volunteer engagement and coordination with county open-space planning.
Staff said they would provide follow-up on project extents and timelines when requested.
