Social studies team narrows middle‑school texts to 'Savas' for primary‑source emphasis

Mysiak, a staff member, told the committee the social studies 6–8 team reviewed materials from McGraw Hill, Discovery Education and what the transcript records as "Savas," and narrowed choices to the latter two that provide usable texts for classroom instruction.
"They appreciated the the sequencing that Savas had in terms of the the content that was provided," Mysiak said, noting the team valued primary sources that let students interpret original documents. Staff described a preference for classroom sets so texts remain at school and experience less wear and tear, while students retain digital access for at‑home work.
Committee members asked about balancing digital components with printed materials. Mysiak said the balance depends on grade level and instructional goals; for middle school social studies the team prioritized physical texts and primary documents but will keep digital materials available for home access. Staff will bring further details and sample materials to the August meeting.
