Parks Director outlines expanded events, playground upgrades and a $130,000 Sandy Bottom grant

Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Director Cronin told council the department aims to strengthen community connection through an expanded events calendar and placemaking efforts. Cronin said the city expanded a concert series that averages 250–300 participants per Sunday, highlighted the Blackbeard Pirate Festival as one of the largest events ("close to almost 12,000" attendees), and listed in‑house events such as Santa's Attic and a Thanksgiving event tied to community engagement.
Cronin reviewed completed and upcoming placemaking projects funded by the capital improvement program: Buckroe Beach Playground replacement (ADA‑compliant), Darling Stadium improvements, and conceptual work for Bluebird Gap Farm. He said a Department of Conservation and Recreation grant for roughly $130,000 will support Sandy Bottom wetland trail regrading, surfacing and ADA trailhead improvements. On other items, Cronin described senior center interior work, Buckroe pier safety upgrades and playground replacements at school sites in partnership with Hampton Public Schools. "We're always striving to improve," Cronin said, adding that consultants and neighborhood stakeholders will be engaged before formal plans are brought to council.
