Neighbors press Mission Viejo to enforce code at hoarding property near elementary school

Multiple residents told the council a property on Via Santa Maria has accumulated debris and constitutes a public-safety and fire hazard near an elementary school. Faith Firston, who said she lives at 22921 Via Santa Maria, described trash and other hazards on the adjacent property and asked what progress the city has made on remediation and enforcement.
Neighbor Steve Dyer said the property had increased accumulations since the last meeting and warned that if hazards result in damage he would hold the city responsible. The City Attorney later reported that occupants of the Santa Maria property have been given notice to remedy the situation and that the compliance deadline is this coming Friday; if the property is not remediated a hearing before a hearing officer will be scheduled.
