The City Council proclaimed May through August 2026 as drowning prevention and awareness season and welcomed Orange County Fire Authority representatives to outline prevention priorities. The proclamation notes drowning is a leading cause of injury-related deaths among young children in California and directs staff to support a public-awareness campaign.
Shane Mall of the Orange County Fire Authority told the council "Just last year in Orange County, there was 95 drownings. Fortunately, only 39 of those were fatal drownings," and urged the ABCs of water safety: active adult supervision, barriers such as pool fences, and swim and CPR classes. OCFA said it will increase outreach and community training as part of a summer campaign focused on pools, beaches and supervised activities.
