Sheriff's captain reports arrests in regional catalytic-converter theft ring; Mission Viejo to roll out VIN-etching program

They were linked to 41 thefts, throughout those contract cities for an estimated loss of $70,000," Captain Jonathan said, describing multi-city collaboration and search warrants executed by investigators. The department said tools and materials associated with the thefts were recovered during the arrests.
As an anti-theft measure, Mission Viejo Police Services will roll out VIN etching on catalytic converters and other removable automotive accessories so recovered items can be linked to victims. The captain described increased late-night surveillance, hot-spot patrols and regional coordination with neighboring contract cities and investigators.
Ending: Deputies said mutual-aid details to Stanton/Garden Grove would wind down after evacuation orders were lifted and that enforcement resources would refocus on proactive patrols and recovery strategies in Mission Viejo.
