Mission Viejo council adopts state and federal legislative platform emphasizing local control

Staff presented a revised state and federal legislative platform drafted with Townsend Public Affairs and the council approved it unanimously (Councilmember Riche absent).
The platform updates add guiding principles emphasizing preservation of local control, fiscal stability and funding opportunities; it includes sections on revenues and taxation, administrative services, community services, housing and land use, economic development, transportation and public works. The housing section adds support for standardized HCD reporting and increased transparency on regional housing need determinations. Staff described the platform as consistent with League of California Cities/ACCOC policies and said it would streamline how staff and the mayor send position letters to legislators and committee members.
The council voted to adopt the platform as presented. Staff and Townsend representatives said the document will be used to rapidly prepare and distribute letters on bills that align with the city’s policy positions.
