Environmental health director to modernize septic mapping and bring new on-site wastewater ordinance to supervisors

Elizabeth Townsend, the county’s environmental health director, told supervisors the department will move to modernize septic-system mapping and bring a new on-site wastewater ordinance to the board for review in September.
Townsend described a GPS-based mapping solution (Traverse PC) and a paired Swedish partner device that produces professional maps for wells and septic components. "It's like 1000 dollars a year. We do have to do a purchase of the equipment... we will be getting the basic 1 around, like, $3,000," she said, and said improved GIS mapping would help homeowners, contractors and zoning staff in permitting and inspections.
Townsend also said the Board of Health approved a new on-site wastewater ordinance that will replace older county code sections and better align with state changes; she told the supervisors she plans to bring the ordinance for review by Sept. 8 and will circulate copies in advance. The draft adds provisions for locating septic systems, clarifies mapping requirements and incorporates the county’s virtual-inspection pilot and corresponding state approvals.
Townsend asked supervisors to review the ordinance before the Sept. 8 meeting and said staff would be available to answer questions.
