Commission says would-be columbarium installer must present drawings

Commission member Joe Mangan told the Williamstown Cemetery Commission Sept. 25 that a resident has asked about placing a large columbarium in the Village Cemetery and that the prospective installer works for Rock of Ages. Mangan said the structure he described would hold around 46 crypts and that one existing unit had to be moved elsewhere earlier.
Commission members emphasized that a formal application and drawings are required. "He needs to come to a meeting," said Daphne Herwig; board members agreed the applicant should submit a drawing and attend a meeting to answer questions about placement, dimensions and ownership of burial rights.
Susan Lyons raised a policy concern, asking why a structure that appears to sell burial space should be allowed in the town cemetery. Joe Mangan responded that the proposal, as described, would be for the individual's family and not for resale. The commission did not approve or deny the concept; instead it directed that the individual return with a formal plan and drawings for review at a future meeting.
