Cemetery commission approves $500 buyback for home burial

The Williamstown Cemetery Commission voted Sept. 25 to repurchase a burial lot in West Hill Cemetery from Julie Henderson for $500, with conditions specified in a draft letter and subject to state home-burial regulations. Commission member Matt Walker made the motion and Daphne Herwig seconded; the board approved the action.
Commission member Susan Lyons explained that Henderson asked the town to buy back the lot because the family plans a home burial. Lyons read a draft letter that would accompany the check and noted the letter includes information about the state regulations governing home burials. Joe Mangan asked that the board also require the hole left by the corner posts to be filled; the board added that instruction to the conditions.
"I’ll make the Motion that we buy back the lot from Julie Henderson in the amount of $500.00 with the conditions in the letter," said Commission member Matt Walker. The board authorized issuing the warrant and mailing the check if the letter is approved.
The minutes show the warrant line for the transaction and list total current warrants reviewed as $5,625, which includes a separate Hill House Estates invoice of $5,125. The commission recorded no income on the meeting date. The buyback will be reflected in cemetery records alongside the required documentation for the home-burial process.
