County readies RFP after consultant flags $3.2M P25 radio upgrade; county share ~$496K

Commissioners discussed a multi-phase plan to modernize county radio infrastructure after staff described findings from a Tusa feasibility review. The Board heard that the county’s portion of a proposed five-site P25 simulcast system would be about $496,000 while the full multi-agency infrastructure could approach $3.2 million. "The county alone portion is about 496,000, but the entire system infrastructure upgrade is... remind me about 3.2, I believe, million dollars," the sheriff said during the briefing.
Staff recommended the next step be a formal RFP so vendors such as Motorola, L3Harris and Kenwood can bid on defined requirements, and emphasized a third phase to secure a preventive-maintenance contract so parts and servicing are guaranteed over the system's life. Commissioners asked staff to return with a scope, funding options and possible grant or financing strategies.
