The Gunner City Council held an extended discussion July 17 about sign-ordinance changes after businesses asked for temporary feather flags and banners to advertise events and promotions.
Council members and staff reviewed current rules that prohibit freestanding feather flags and discussed options such as allowing business-name-only feather flags for limited periods (examples discussed: 14 days, up to four times per year) and requiring placement behind sidewalks and away from visibility triangles. Staff suggested permitting temporary banners attached to building walls but not freestanding signs in rights-of-way; council members voiced concern that unrestricted flags could clutter corridors if every business used them. Council directed Council members Allen and Dave to work with staffer Eric to draft revised ordinance language and return with concrete proposals.
The council emphasized balancing support for struggling small businesses with public-safety and aesthetic concerns and asked staff to research monument-sign requirements that could be applied when a new center is developed.
