Jackson Council advances towing ordinance to curb fraud; first reading approved

Council President Mordecai Bernstein introduced Ordinance 2026-24, which repeals and replaces township code chapter on towers and wreckers to better align Jackson’s towing rules with surrounding municipalities and address alleged fraud where vehicle owners provide payment information by phone and later cancel. Bernstein said the ordinance would require on-site vehicle release in person and allow an additional fee where necessary. "This would require them to be doing it in person," Bernstein said while summarizing Chief Nelson's briefing on fraud concerns.
A motion to introduce the ordinance and authorize notice of a public hearing carried by roll call after a second; council confirmed the measure will proceed to the public hearing stage where residents will be able to comment prior to final adoption.
