San Patricio County court moves health authority post to contracted position

Judge Krebs presided as county staff outlined why the county is shifting its medical director, or public health authority, from a full-time county role to a contract position. County staff said the job had been budgeted at about "$82,000 almost $83,000" but that the work did not require a full-time employee and that contracting would allow the county to pay for hours actually worked.
Commissioners pressed for guarantees about disaster response and continuity of services. Commissioner Yardley said he worried that a contractor might be less binding during hurricanes and other emergencies, and county staff replied that "we did discuss that part of the position itself" and that the contract would include pandemic and hurricane response duties and hourly invoicing. The court approved the change to a contract position and directed staff to draft the contract terms to include disaster-response obligations.
