A presiding council member announced at the start of the Dec. 8 City of Hays council meeting that they will not seek re-election in the May 2026 municipal election. The speaker said they would not sign petitions or run and pledged to support the mayor if she files for the office.
“I’m officially announcing that I will not see reelection on the May election. I will not be a candidate,” the presiding council member said, adding that the mayor would have their “100% support” if she files. The comment came during opening announcements before the meeting moved into routine agenda items. The council did not take any formal action related to candidacies during the session.
