Calvert County commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing Children's Mental Health Awareness Week and received a multi-agency briefing on local behavioral health resources for youth.
"Promoting youth mental health promotes adult mental health, as well as reducing and preventing substance use disorder in adults," said Andrea McDonald Fingland, director of the Calvert County Local Behavioral Health Authority, who outlined resource coordination and a family-peer support grant the LBHA administers for school-based services. The LBHA and school staff also promoted a Spring Into Wellness behavioral health fair at the Career Technology Academy and displayed student art from a suicide-prevention contest.
School and health partners described classroom and transition supports for students who require residential treatment or other intensive services, and emphasized that families can contact the LBHA for help navigating resources. County and health-system speakers encouraged public attendance at local events this week and noted the outreach aims to reduce stigma and improve connections between families, schools and community providers.
