Finance Committee endorses $500,000 nonprofit funding pool for FY2026–27

The High Point Finance Committee voted to recommend allocating $500,000 to outside nonprofit organizations for fiscal year 2026–27 after hearing from Steven Harrelick, the city's Budget and Performance Director.
"For this previous year's process, the city received 64 applications totaling a little over 1,900,000," Harrelick said, and noted that the adopted budget includes $500,000 available for allocation. The committee approved the funding recommendation and will forward the item to the general agenda because several members will need to recuse themselves there.
Committee members praised the nonprofit sector's role in the community during discussion. One council member thanked local nonprofits and warned the selection process is difficult because staff must weigh requests against projects already underway. Harrelick said the budget office coordinates the application process.
The vote at the committee level was recorded as passed; the recommendation will appear on the City Council general meeting agenda for final action, where recusals will be handled during that session.
