Garland Parks Foundation to host 'Surf and Swim' fundraiser May 16 to send kids to Stars Camp

The Garland Parks Foundation announced a fundraising preview for the Surf and Swim Aquatic Center on May 16 from noon to 4 p.m. Margaret Lutz, foundation president, said proceeds from the event will help send children to the city's Stars Camp and support foundation programs.
"It is a sneak peek exclusive event prior to the official opening of Surf and Swim Aquatic Center, which is a 2019 bond program project," Lutz said. She told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board that the foundation has sold around 250 tickets so far and is aiming to sponsor 25 children for Stars Camp.
Organizers described family‑friendly activities: a duck‑pull raffle for prizes, a DJ, concessions and a nonprofit fair that will include Keep Garland Beautiful and the Spring Creek Preserve. Treasurer Kenya Ott asked board members and residents to consider donating raffle items such as gift cards or small family experiences to expand prizes.
Foundation members also described a bench dedication and interpretive sign planned for Oden Park, saying the donor family requested a plaque in memory of Rick Oden. Parks staff confirmed bench branding and interpretive signage will be standardized for foundation donations.
The foundation asked the public to spread the word and noted that the event will also serve as a dry run for staff ahead of the official opening and holiday weekend traffic.
