County to seek roughly $88,568 in DHCD CDBG COVID-extension funds to support food pantries and shelters

The Department of Community Resources asked the board to permit staff to submit a DHCD Community Development Block Grant COVID-extension application to support local food pantries and homeless shelters.
"In the application, the Department of Community Resources is proposing to fund the following sub recipients," staff explained and listed recommended purchases including a commercial walk-in refrigerator for the Ladies of Charity food pantry and washers/dryers and dining-room furnishings for shelter programs. Kiko Nash and Jennifer Moreland described an adjustment after state feedback: the county's request was reduced from $104,083 to $88,568 because DHCD disallowed furniture purchases.
Kathleen Temple, president of Ladies of Charity Calvert County, read a written letter of support and provided service data: "In 2024, 589 families visited the ladies at charity Calvert food pantry a total of 5,856 times," she said, adding that the pantry distributed roughly 205,000 pounds of food last year. Commissioners moved to close the record and authorized the board president to sign the grant agreement and any necessary subrecipient agreements once DHCD approves the application.
The motion to authorize application and sign required documents carried on a voice vote.
