Dr. Yolanda Wilson, president of the College of Southern Maryland, and a delegation of trustees and staff presented the college's annual "State of the College" to the Board of County Commissioners.
Wilson highlighted rising enrollment and local participation, saying the county had notable growth: "At the close of fiscal year 2024, CSM had welcomed 14,971 credit and non‑credit learners ... This represents for Calvert County an 11.2% increase in Calvert students from the previous year," and that dual‑enrollment increased by nearly 50% locally. She described workforce investments including two new cybersecurity labs (one at Prince Frederick), an aviation maintenance pathway moving through state approval, and expanded trade programs at the Center for Trades and Energy Training.
Student speakers and alumni described pathways from CSM to four‑year institutions and into regional employers and federal internships. Brianna Garcia (speaker 31) and others credited CSM scholarships, advising and transfer agreements for their progress. Wilson also noted partnerships with industry and military employers and announced upcoming initiatives to assist displaced federal workers.
Commissioners congratulated the college and asked about applied baccalaureate degrees and teacher‑pipeline opportunities; Wilson described ongoing statewide conversations and local articulation agreements. The board received the presentation and extended congratulations to CSM for local student outcomes and workforce alignment.
