Commissioners approve $12.47 million allocation to Calvert County Public Schools to legalize prior emergency action

Acting deputy director of accounting Caleb Bridal told the board that the Department of Finance and Budget "has recommended that the BOCC allocate a total of $12,469,199 to the, to the Board of Education for use by Calvert County Public Schools." Bridal said the funds include about $8 million from prior‑year fund balance, $1.5 million from the OPEB BOE contribution and roughly $2.9 million from additional funds to cover the oversight identified after the fiscal-year budget was finalized.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing. Commissioners framed the vote as legalizing an emergency decision made at an earlier June 2024 meeting to avert layoffs in the school system. The motion to close the record and adopt the amendment was moved and seconded, and the chair called for the voice vote; the motion carried without opposition.
The budget amendment was described by staff as a corrective action rather than a new recurring appropriation; the Department of Finance and Budget will implement the allocation as set forth in BA2025‑0356.
What happens next: the resolution adopting BA2025‑0356 is on the record at the county and will be implemented by the county finance staff and the Board of Education.
