Commissioners approve Zamboni seasonal-worker contract amid debate over Kaliseum costs

After discussion about Kaliseum staffing and hours, the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 19 waived purchasing requirements and approved a part-time Zamboni Driver contract. The contract was approved by a 5–1 vote (one absent). Commissioner Robert Baldwin voted no and voiced concern about Kaliseum expenses and additional funding to the director; Administration/CFO Patrick Whiteford said the contract added no net expense because hours were reduced in two other position accounts.
Commissioners also set a Personnel Committee meeting for Dec. 11, 2025, to address wages, Kaliseum staffing and office hours. Baldwin’s dissent highlighted an ongoing internal conversation about Kaliseum revenues and staffing levels; the board approved the contract as presented and authorized staff to implement the hiring process under counsel-approved form.
