Kalkaska County will track walk-in traffic; offices to stay open until 5 p.m. during study

County Administrator Pat Whiteford announced a plan to record walk-in visits at non-court offices Jan. 5–30, 2026 (results due Feb. 6), with all offices remaining open until 5 p.m. during the study; the Kaliseum was excluded and will be studied separately.
County Administrator/CFO Pat Whiteford told commissioners the county will conduct a two-part study of public walk-in visits to determine optimal public hours. All non-court county offices will track walk-in visits from Jan. 5 through Jan. 30, 2026, with results submitted on Feb. 6, 2026. Offices will remain open until 5 p.m. for the duration of the study, and the process will be repeated in the summer to capture seasonal variation.
Whiteford said the Kaliseum will be handled with a separate data-collection plan and will not be included in the Jan. study. Commissioners discussed possible electronic tracking options for the Kaliseum and the need to publicize any permanent changes to hours.
