Kalkaska County approves $1-per-hour raise for non-union staff starting Jan. 1, 2026

The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 11 approved a $1-per-hour raise for all non-union employees effective Jan. 1, 2026, by a consensus motion led by Commissioner Truman Bicum and supported by Commissioner Jeff Sieting.
The motion specifies inclusion of the Kalkaska County Undersheriff and excludes the Kaliseum Director, elected officials and the COA Director. County Administrator/CFO Pat Whiteford said staff will review non-union wage scales across departments to identify further adjustments. Commissioners debated whether raises should be merit-based and noted performance evaluations are not uniformly implemented; no opposition to the consensus motion was recorded.
Commissioners also raised the question of how to treat Kaliseum wages and emphasized that Kaliseum pay should not be set solely on profitability; Kaliseum inclusion in wage discussions was deferred to later sessions.
