Commissioners plan stakeholder meeting after study finds eastern Coryell County groundwater drawdown

Following a recent study presented by Blackland Research, commissioners said groundwater levels are declining faster in the county's eastern portion and scheduled a stakeholder meeting (cities and water providers) to define next-level questions and explore aquifer storage and monitoring.
The judge told the court that a recent presentation and data analysis show groundwater in Coryell County’s eastern portion is declining at a faster rate than in the west, and he proposed a facilitated stakeholder meeting with municipalities and water providers to identify next-level questions and coordination steps.
"I think really one of the obvious ones is...are ASRs (aquifer storage and recovery) reasonable for Coryell County?" the judge said, noting that storage sites may be feasible in the western county while the greatest drawdown occurs in the east. The judge said he will host an invitation-only stakeholder workshop to review the Blackland Research study with Gatesville, Evant, Oglesby and local water providers to determine follow-up technical questions and priorities.
County staff described ongoing installation of stream gauges and more advanced monitoring units at strategic locations in the Leon River watershed to improve data collection. Commissioners said collected data will be shared with the county and public as available. The court will issue invitations and seek to set a date convenient to municipal and water-provider stakeholders.
