San Pedro principal outlines plan to boost English-learner growth by 10 percentage points

Devine said San Pedro’s census is about 435 students, roughly 98% socioeconomically disadvantaged and about 82% English learners. She identified four primary strategies used this year — CMC Math to encourage student math discourse, strengthened family partnerships (including math nights and one‑on‑one LPAC parent engagements), integrated ELD strategies across content areas, and robust professional learning teams (PLTs) and coaching. "We are trying to go up 10 percentage points in the number of English learner students who either moved up 1 performance level or maintained level 4 on the spring 2026 LPAC," Devine said, noting a preliminary climb in students receiving a level 4.
Trustees praised the school’s family engagement work and the completion of campus improvements including a new field. Board members asked staff to clarify LPAC/LP levels for families and commended the site’s outreach to parents who attended a bilingual conference that boosted local parent leadership. The principal said next year the school will pilot a new language‑arts curriculum aligned to recent math adoption and continue tier‑2 small‑group instruction and coaching supports.
