County authorizes $42,082 remonumentation grant application and creates peer review group

Kalkaska County's Committee of the Whole voted Dec. 10 to allow Grant Administrator JoAnn DeGraaf to apply for the 2026 Survey and Remonumentation Grant in the amount of $42,082 from the State of Michigan. The committee authorized Chair Kohn Fisher and DeGraaf to electronically sign the grant agreement, and approved a Surveyor Services Agreement to be signed by the Chair when finalized by counsel.
County Surveyor Dean Farrier addressed the committee, stressing that remonumentation helps ensure survey corners remain accurate for future surveying. The committee also approved a Kalkaska County Remonumentation Peer Review Group consisting of three licensed surveyors (Neil Way, Scott Papineau and Marvin Meyers) with two alternates; compensation for peer reviewers was set not to exceed $300 per member and to be paid with 2026 State Grant funds. Commissioners approved annual compensation of $2,000 to Grant Administrator JoAnn DeGraaf for grant administration duties to be fully funded by the grant.
