Kalkaska County faces $611,829 shortfall in proposed 2026 budget

County staff told the board the shortfall may shrink or disappear if departments fail to use all of their appropriations. County Administrator Patrick Whiteford was directed to distribute a copy of the Clerk’s office budget to commissioners to aid further review. The board scheduled a motion to adopt the 2026 budget for the Nov. 19 regular meeting.
Accountant Corinna Hervey flagged the shortfall and recommended staff check line items and remaining encumbrances before final action. No formal adoption occurred at the workshop; commissioners discussed potential remedies but did not vote on budget adoption at the Nov. 13 session.
