The Vernon County Board approved an amended resolution adding a set of nonbinding expectations for the Board Chair, including maintaining regular office hours, meeting with the administrative coordinator, attending the Wisconsin Counties Association conference and representing the county at public events.
The proposal, introduced after questions about whether a salary implied duties, was described by a supervisor as “encouragements” that the board cannot require. A supervisor objected to duplicative language in the draft and successfully moved to remove a redundant sentence; the board then approved the resolution as amended. Chair calls and vote procedures on the floor were used to adopt the change.
Supporters said the guidance clarifies norms for conduct and communication without creating enforceable duties, and the resolution sets the effective date to take effect after the next election to align with the incoming chair’s term.
