Commission approves local grants for opioid prevention and housing feasibility; community groups receive discretionary awards

The commission approved a $100,000 allocation from the county opioid settlement fund to Heal the Hood Foundation to support opioid prevention work in Memphis Shelby County Schools. The foundation’s founder testified that recent fentanyl incidents in schools and a recent youth death motivated a citywide campaign of school visits, parent support and public service messaging.
Commissioners also approved a $40,000 county contingency grant to Blue City Community Reinvestment Corporation to finance feasibility and predevelopment work for an affordable housing site identified through a National Association of Counties technical assistance program. Other community awards — including multiple Milton Community Enhancement Grants to local nonprofits such as Feed the Needy — were amended on the floor and approved.
