The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation declaring October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month following a presentation by Melinda Boss, executive director of the YWCA of Sweetwater County.
Boss outlined local service statistics and described support services the YWCA provides. She said the organization served 65 clients in August, 57 of whom were new that month, and that 70% of services provided last year were individual advocacy. “We had 65 clients come into the office that day or that year month, 57 of them being brand new,” Boss said. She described shelter nights (81 days of residents in the shelter in the period cited) and the filing of protection orders, and announced a local Purple Glow Run and memorial events tied to the Silent Witness Initiative.
Commissioners praised the work of the YWCA, noted the need for community involvement, and moved to approve the proclamation as presented. The motion passed unanimously; the YWCA will hold a vigil and family‑friendly walk on Oct. 17 beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the Young at Heart Senior Center, and the organization continues to publish memorial information on its Facebook page.
