Commission approves MLK Day and World Braille Day proclamations; staff flags past controversy around Black History outreach in Hutto

The Hutto DEIB Commission voted to request an MLK Day proclamation be read at the Jan. 8 council meeting, with Commissioner Hollingsworth to lead remarks after the mayor reads the proclamation. The commission approved the motion by voice vote.
Commissioners also approved a World Braille Day proclamation for January and discussed efforts to make proclamations available in braille for library archives. One staff member cautioned commissioners that past Black History Month activities had drawn mixed responses: "...the commission has ... invited black families of Hutto. But because of some past tumultuous, things, they once, I think, chose to show up and then another time chose to, kind of actively protest it," staff said. Commissioners agreed to proceed with outreach and to coordinate scheduling and templates with city staff.
Staff said they will circulate proclamation templates and explained council calendar timing: proclamations tied to January council cadence likely need to be submitted about a week before the Jan. 8 meeting.
