JCCS reports improved assessment results but flags enrollment and suspension concerns

Renee Wheeler, director of Juvenile Court and Community Schools, reviewed outcomes and priorities for JCCS, highlighting both gains and areas needing attention. She said course access had expanded — "In 02/2425, we had 90.4 percent of high school students enrolled in an a through g course, and 28.6 percent of these students successfully completed the course" — and reported a 6.7 percentage-point increase in students who nearly met or met the CAST mathematics standard year over year.
Wheeler also identified continuing challenges: CTE enrollment dropped 18% at the court school, suspension rates declined overall but increased in community schools, and local mathematics mastery metrics show room to grow. She told the board staff will continue interventions, teacher professional learning, and parent-engagement work to close gaps.
