Superintendent previews back-to-school plans, names new transportation director

Superintendent Dr. Gilstrap told the board the district will begin the school year on Tuesday, August 12 and encouraged families to "circle that date on the calendar." He said the district hosted 35 new teachers this summer—nine of them new to the profession—and that staff convocation and service-award recognition will take place the week before school starts.
Dr. Gilstrap introduced Ramon Lovario as the district's new transportation director and said Lovario previously served as the district's master mechanic for six years and had "a wealth of knowledge and experience" about bus routing and operations. The superintendent said the transportation department has already run dry routes and that drivers are doing practice runs to identify hazards and timing issues before the first day.
The superintendent also reminded the public of a Back-to-School Bash scheduled the night before and urged patience for increased traffic in school zones. "Tuesday, August 12 will be the 1st day of school," he said, adding that the district is working to ensure students travel to and from campuses safely.
