County approves $5,000 opioid-settlement grant for Leech Lake Band initiative

Public Health Planner Jamie Richter summarized the Opioid Settlement Committee's June 23 meeting and presented Round 2/3 grantee updates. Richter said the committee scheduled an Opioid Epidemic – Naloxone Training for July 21, 2026, and reported Cass County Public Health received a Drug Overdose Prevention: Overdose Fatality Review Grant to support multidisciplinary case reviews and prevention recommendations. She described substance concerns discussed by the Committee, including kratom and potent synthetic opioids such as carfentanil.
The Committee recommended funding Application 3.13, BaBaamiwizh Community Navigators (Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe), for $5,000 for operating supplies and startup costs. County CFO Becky Toso presented financial figures showing $42,225.33 in revenue and $59,297.76 in expenditures for the relevant reporting period; the Board approved the $5,000 award unanimously.
