Deputy Director Armon Smith briefed the board on a range of project updates at the June 10 meeting. He said economic development staff are receiving registrations for the Ashland/Hanover Hospitality & Tourism Workshops on June 16 and 30 and that Rachel Smith, director of tourism, is assisting staff. Smith listed recent permit activity and local business support: major permits pulled include The Virginia Home and Rosendin Electric; staff assisted P.D. Brooks with a promotional video and connected the business with Randolph‑Macon's engineering program. For the US‑1 Gateway, King's Acres is under contract with a grocery chain and the former Greentop property is under contract for hotel, medical office and food‑service development. The Iron Horse project is slated for Planning Commission review in June with concerns about support to move forward.
