Floresville ISD reports 317 students in gifted-and-talented services; district seeks greater Hispanic representation

Tanya Castillo, the district's coordinator of special programs, presented data on the gifted-and-talented (GT) and bilingual programs. "Floresville ISD provided gifted and talented services to 317 identified students, which represents 7.8% of our student population," Castillo said, and described the district's universal kindergarten screening and referral process for grades 1–12.
Castillo noted demographic disparities and said the program needs to increase Hispanic participation to better mirror district demographics; she cited TEA guidance that program demographics should mirror the district at about 80% representation. On bilingual services, Castellio reported 135 emergent bilingual students in the dual-language program (pre-K–5) and described Title III and bilingual ESL allotments as the primary funding sources. She also said 31 students may be eligible to reclassify as English proficient once testing data arrive.
Castillo outlined goals for 2025–26, including curriculum development for a GT pullout program, broader universal screening, and expanding GT-trained teachers across campuses.
