District staff presented a calendar development report that reviewed legal requirements and early metrics from Floresville's hybrid calendar model, which alternates 5-day and 4-day weeks.
"The minimum number of minutes is 75,600 per year," a staff presenter told trustees while explaining Texas Education Code requirements and the district's flexibility under its District of Innovation plan. Staff said the hybrid calendar reduced student days by five, reduced staff days by nine, and increased the elementary day by about 10 minutes while shortening secondary days by 10'15 minutes.
Early data reported by staff included a 3% reduction in teacher turnover after the calendar was announced, an 8% drop in uncertified teachers in classrooms, a 0.5 percentage-point net increase in student attendance during the first semester of the hybrid schedule, and reduced discipline referrals at middle school (37% decrease) and high school (24% decrease). Staff cautioned that some measures require a full-year comparison and that assessment changes make performance comparisons difficult.
Board members asked staff to ensure surveys include information about potential funding or grant implications from the state; staff said the calendar committee has been briefed and that the parent survey launching the next morning can include that context. Staff said calendar committee input and DEIC review will inform draft calendars for board parameters in February and a board proposal in March.
