Floresville ISD forms School Library Advisory Council under SB 13 to review materials and challenge process

The Floresville ISD board heard a report on creation and duties of a School Library Advisory Council (SLAC) established to implement recent state legislation known as SB 13.
"SB 13...ensuring that parents have access to library catalog and control which library materials their students can access," a SLAC presenter said, describing the law's purpose to require a formal review and a local advisory process. The district said SLAC will review proposed acquisitions for four campuses, ensure alignment with curriculum standards, and post recommended lists publicly for 30 days before the board acts.
Miss Jacob, identified in the presentation as the district instructional media specialist and librarian, outlined the SLAC membership: voting members are parents of FISD students and nonvoting advisors include campus staff. The SLAC will also handle formal challenges; when a challenge is filed the district will restrict student access to the disputed material while the SLAC reviews it and issues a recommendation that can be appealed to the board.
Board members asked when procurement is expected; staff said if SLAC meets in late January and the district posts lists in February, the board could consider procurement in March. As of the Jan. 5 meeting staff reported zero formal challenges received so far.
