Superintendent outlines Prop 47 grant bid for countywide diversion and flags assessment gaps

Dr. Sabah said the COE applied for a Prop 47 diversion grant to expand a Watsonville-based restorative diversion program countywide under the working name Project Ascend, and that the application requests $7,000,000 over four years to scale services and make the model sustainable. He also presented high-level state assessment results and noted equity gaps: staff recited that about 55% of English-only students met the English language arts standard in the latest CASP release, compared with 20.9% for English learners and lower rates for Latinx and socioeconomically disadvantaged students; staff said more granular data are available in the COE data portal for district- and grade-level analysis. The board discussed the countywide math initiative and next steps for using the data to target supports.
