Board honors long-serving staff and trustee; Rosa Rosas and Sandra Nichols recognized

The Santa Cruz County Board of Education used its December meeting to honor long-serving public servants.
Trustee Sandra Nichols (term expired) was recognized in absentia for 12 years of service with remarks highlighting her advocacy for biliteracy, environmental studies and career-technical programs. Superintendent Farris Sabah and trustees praised Nichols' bilingual leadership and statewide advocacy for school funding.
The board then presented Rosa Rosas, who has worked for the County Office of Education for 23 years, with a certificate and an orchid. Johnny Rice, executive director of alternative education, said, "Rosa has been the heart and soul of this place for 23 years, giving freely of her wisdom," and presented a farewell card and contributions from colleagues. Rosas thanked colleagues and described the alternative education program as providing essential supports to students with challenges.
