Scotts Valley Unified tells county committee it can serve parcel, warns against setting boundary-change precedent

At the hearing, Nadia Ascolkopf, director of student services for Scotts Valley Unified, said the district learned the Millikens currently have no school-aged children and stressed that Scotts Valley is prepared to serve any family that moves into the parcel. "If we start now, where is this going to stop?" Ascolkopf asked, urging caution about opening a precedent for parcel transfers that could multiply over time.

Ascolkopf noted many irregular district boundary shapes are tied to topography and roadways and said the district provides bus transportation only for students with special needs or experiencing homelessness, not broadly for typical mountain-area students. Her remarks framed the district's position that existing procedures — including interdistrict transfer options — and the statutory criteria offer appropriate paths for addressing particular cases.
