New Santa Cruz County Board sworn in; Sanchez elected board president

The Santa Cruz County Board of Education swore in four newly elected trustees and completed its annual organizational business at the December meeting.
Superintendent Farris Sabah administered the oath to Greg Larson (Trustee Area 3), Edward Estrada (Area 4), Rachel Williams (Area 5) and Ed Acosta (Area 6). Greg Larson thanked residents of his area and described outreach he completed during onboarding, saying, "I got 300 endorsements largely from parent volunteers I'd worked with in our local schools." Larson said he has toured schools across his district in preparation for his service.
During the organizational portion, Trustee Rachel Williams nominated the vice chair (Abel) for president: "I would like to make a nomination, of our vice chair Abel to be, president," she said. The board also confirmed Edward Estrada as vice chair. A roll-call vote followed for officer appointments and committee assignments; the board approved the slate and established members for standing and ad hoc committees.
The board agreed to keep organizational continuity by asking past members to serve on key committees, and staff clarified that the agenda committee is considered ad hoc under the board bylaws. The newly seated trustees made brief remarks about priorities including student supports and collegial governance.
Looking ahead, President Sanchez said the board will continue onboarding activities and finalize committee schedules for January.
