The Santa Cruz County Office of Education board voted to appoint Natalie Hopkins as the district's second student trustee following an on-record interview.
Hopkins, a student at Oasis School, told trustees she wants to amplify alternative-education students' voices and proposed using brief Google Forms surveys during students' weekly meetings to collect feedback. "My main reason I want to be a student trustee is I feel like not enough students' voices are heard, especially in alternative education," Hopkins said. (Natalie Hopkins)
Trustees praised Hopkins's combination of ASB experience and workplace conflict-resolution skills; Student trustee Reuben Marcus moved the nomination and Rachel Gibbs seconded it. After deliberation the board carried the appointment in a roll-call vote. Trustees said the COE will provide orientation and a name plaque and will swear Hopkins in at the next regular meeting.
