The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commission on April 7 approved renewal of the Southwest Regional Juvenile Detention interlocal agreement, an arrangement in place since 1992 that serves roughly 11 counties.
Commissioner Ed Beaudette explained the agreement helps counties avoid the high cost of housing juveniles in detention; he said the current per-diem rate is $260 per day and the signed agreement is due by April 17. County Attorney Morgan Smith noted alternative placements have reduced recent use of the detention beds but said when secure placement is necessary costs can be significant.
Commissioner Beaudette moved approval; Commissioner Steve Gates seconded and the motion passed 5-0.
