Aliceville says it will hire an economic developer after recent plant closures

The Aliceville City Council announced at its July 28 meeting that the city plans to hire an economic developer to serve as a point of contact for local businesses and prospective employers after the recent closures of local industrial employers.
"I do plan to hire a economic developer for the city of Aliceville," the presiding official said, explaining the city has budgeted line items for economic development that have previously gone unfilled. The official cited recent closures including a local lumber operation and a casting/iron facility that shut about four months ago, saying the new hire will work within existing budget constraints and may be a hometown candidate.
Council members framed the hire as a strategic step to bring and retain jobs so local young people can work in Aliceville rather than move away for employment. The city said it will formally introduce and present the hire once details are confirmed.
