HHS previews $2.7M DSHS contract for developmental‑disability employment and day services

Gina James of Health and Human Services told commissioners the county will present a fiscal‑year 2027 contract with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (Developmental Disabilities Administration) to fund adult employment and day services and a small set‑aside for birth‑to‑3 child development services.
James said the total contract this year is about $2.7 million (she described prior years starting larger before state funding was reduced) and that the county contracts with five to six community providers to deliver services on its behalf. She estimated roughly 150 adults are in the program in the county and said about 50 employers participate in hiring or hosting supported employees. "If there's an individual who's employed at a business, the business pays that individual just like they would pay you or I in a job," James explained, adding that the contract pays for staff supports such as job coaches so individuals can obtain and maintain employment.
James said pass‑through contracts with community partners will appear in the next month and staff hold a county reserve amount to adjust allocations when clients change providers or service levels through the year. Commissioners indicated support and asked about employer participation and annual spend rates; James said the county typically disperses most of the pass‑through funding to providers while maintaining some county-level reserve for adjustments.
